Danesfield Church of England School Living and Learning Together

Science

A high quality Science education not only provides the foundations for understanding the world around us, but equips pupils with essential knowledge and life skills needed in a changing world. At Danesfield Church of England Middle School Science is taught in attainment groups in years 7 and 8, and in mixed attaining classes in years 5 and 6.

The new National  Curriculum is followed in all year groups with a bespoke themed approach in Key Stage 2 using the Rising Stars "Switched on Science" programme as a basis for study.

The Oxford University Press ‘Activate’ programme of study is then taught in Key Stage 3. This enables pupils to engage with up to date, relevant and interesting concepts thereby providing a solid foundation for further work in years 9, 10 and 11.

The Science curriculum links closely with the Geography, Mathematics and Design Technology curriculum, with pupils using practical investigations to reinforce key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In years 5 and 6 the teaching is done by the year teams, whereas in years 7 and 8 all the Science is taught by experienced specialist teachers.
