Danesfield Church of England School Living and Learning Together

English

“I love having time to read every day. I am really enjoying studying Gothic Horror; I love the stories. I have been writing my own horror stories for several years and now I can build on these ideas in class.” Year 7 pupil

During their time at Danesfield, we aim for all children to become confident speakers, creative writers and fluent readers.

Lessons deliver varied opportunities for children to write for both purpose and pleasure; a skill which improves with their evolving knowledge of grammar and extended vocabulary.

Children are taught an appreciation of reading by reading from a wide range of high quality texts and by discussing their understanding with reference to their developing skills of inference and deduction.

Pupils are encouraged to speak confidently and effectively using standard English in a range of contexts including expressing ideas, speeches, discussions and presentations where they are taught to use intonation, tone and volume for impact.

Most importantly, English at Danesfield aims to unlock children’s learning across the curriculum and widen their life-long chances.
